Explore the Indian Ocean’s wildest island with Abercrombie & Kent

Antananarivo – Andasibe-Mantadia – Palmarium Reserve
Embark on a 10-day adventure through Madagascar’s wild heart. Explore the vibrant capital of Antananarivo, wander the lush rainforests of Andasibe-Mantadia in search of rare lemurs, and retreat to the secluded Palmarium Reserve along the Pangalanes Canal. This itinerary blends wildlife encounters, cultural experiences, and serene landscapes for an unforgettable escape.

Head out into the Perinet Reserve with your local guide in search of the elusive Indri Indri. With its barely visible tail, black and white markings and a surprised teddy-bear face, this lemur is one of the few animals in the world that cannot survive in captivity. As you walk through the rainforest, look out for troops of grey bamboo lemurs, common brown lemur, diademed sifaka and the black and white ruffed lemur, as well as bird species, plenty of reptiles and some of Madagascar’s more than a thousand orchid species.

A treasure trove for naturalists, Mantadia National Park is packed with seldom seen species of mammals, reptiles and birds. Head off after breakfast to spot various lemur species on walking trails where the forest is tall and wild. You will also find an abundance of birds including the scaly ground roller, the pitta-like ground roller and the red-breasted coua. Round it off with a picnic by the Rianasoa Waterfall.

This excursion takes you on a guided walk through the sacred spiny forest to meet the local Antandroy Tribe. Walking among the tribe’s ancestral tombs, you will see an extraordinary array of flora and fauna. Once with the tribe, you will be introduced to their customs and culture, before enjoying sundowners on the bank of the Mandrare River.
